Mesuring telomeres

Telomeres shorten after every chromosome replication. When telomeres are so short that replication of the cell may no be done with integrity, there will start entering into senescence replication, which leads to apoptosis of the cell, and the replication stops! Each cell has a limit: the Hayflick limit that establishes the established number of cellular division, which means that this number is between 50 to 70 times replication!

 

In order to have a better representation of what happening, a fetus may have between 15 kb to 20 kb pairs

 

By birth, this number reduced from 10 to 15 kb and then to reduce homogeneitically from 100 hundred to several hundred pairs each year

 

Telomeres enter in a short zone when then are under 3 kb!

 

Speaking of health and life expectancy, we have 2 parameters that matter the most :

1) Percentage of critically short telomeres

2) The degree reached by telomere attrition

 

The greatest value is in obtaining serial measurements and incorporating an annual health status by measuring Telomeres.

BIOLOGICAL vs CHRONOLOGICAL AGE

 

You have different ways to test your telomeres:

A test called PCR ( Polymerase Chain Reaction) is made from a simple blood test. This test PCR determines the median length of your telomeres in order to calculate your biological age.

A test called Telomere Analysis Technology (TAT) test is a biomarker that enables risk detection and early forecast of various diseases.

What are Telomeres?

 

At the end of your chromosomes are protectives caps to preserve the integrity of the data when duplicating cells. When cells divide, telomeres shorten, and when they become too short to warranty a healthy cell, cells top duplicating. To have long telomere is a good sign of long life expectancy and is considered as a shield against diseases. Your telomere structure is mostly given by your parents as genetic inheritance and maybe slightly modified by your Lifestyle habits and some environmental factors.
